Faced with the most challenging economic inheritance of any new president since Roosevelt in 1933, Barack Obama begins with the inestimable asset of widespread and bipartisan support. That is the good news. The bad news is his stimulus package may not be effective, and his economic team may squabble. The recession could turn into a depression and last longer than anyone thinks. And the global nature of the economic downturn means that there is no savior on the horizon. The new president may need a new plan sooner rather than later.
