U.K. Ministry of Defence: Performance Management

The U.K. Ministry of Defence obtains its technical support from a leading internal business group. This group was undertaking a significant business-change programme focused on building a high performance culture and improving capabilities across the organisation.

Challenge
The CEO of this internal business group invited A.T. Kearney to assess the current status of the performance programme and to develop measures to track and monitor progress against business objectives.

Approach
Following a diagnostic assessment and benchmarking, we recommended a suite of metrics and measurement processes, and a governance system that would help drive and embed improved performance across the business. In a series of workshops, we worked with business leaders to devise early action plans to accelerate performance-based change.

Results
This short project quickly achieved significant results, including:

  • Instilling more reliance on objective measures and assessments, and less on subjective judgments
  • A vision aligned with business objectives, strategies and key success factors
  • Wider reporting of metrics and achievements
  • Tools for better real-time assessments of changes achieved in business outputs, people, processes and behaviours
