James Deighton

Partner, Asia Pacific

James Deighton is a partner in the Melbourne office and leads the Financial Institutions Practice in the Asia Pacific region. He has more than 20 years of consulting and operational experience in Australia, Asia, and the Middle East. James specializes in working with senior executives on growth strategy, strategic process improvement, and sales effectiveness. Jame's representative engagements include:

Corporate/Business unit strategy

  • Developed the distribution strategy for a business division of a top four Australian bank for the third-party channel, and the small and medium-sized enterprises, agri, and middle-market segments
  • Designed the growth strategy for a leading wealth management company
  • Utilised economic profit modelling for a bank to re-segment the customer base and develop a new approach to designing the distribution footprint

Sales effectiveness

  • Developed a new sales culture for a retail banking branch and the sales operating rhythm
  • Provided hands-on coaching to relationship-based field sales force across range of financial services products
  • Developed a "prime shelf" set of priority products for a financial services organisation and improved the ease of purchase/sale of these products

Operational effectiveness

  • Developed the long-term target operating model for a major financial services organization and developed the blueprint to implement it
  • Designed a new operating model and developed the systems, people, and culture implications of this for a leading telecommunications client
  • Redesigned the operations to reduce the cycle time in mortgage processing

Operations strategy

  • Redesigned a multi-site contact centre operation to consolidate and create an operation that would deliver superior customer service
  • Developed blueprint for redesign of operations unit with more than 2,000 people
  • Developed the target state for an operational unit that drove towards a mix of off-shoring and consolidation of local sites

Prior to joining A.T. Kearney, James was a co-owner of the consulting firm, Business Development Partners. He also was a director in M&A with Deutsche Bank, an engagement manager with McKinsey & Company, and worked with the leading engineering firm, ABB, throughout the region.

James completed an MBA from the Melbourne Business School where he was a Rupert Murdoch Scholar and won the CUB Prize for final year distinction and the Amcor Prize for Operations Management. James also holds a BS from the University of Melbourne.
